  • Sergei Bender

    Sergei Bender

    1 photo

Sergei Bender is an internationally renowned artist and photographer.

Born in St. Petersburg (formerly Leningrad), Russia, Sergei studied as an artist at the Academy of Arts school and then at the St. Petersburg State University of Architecture and Civil Engineering where he qualified as an architect.

His passion for art and photography comes from his appreciation for St. Petersburg’s architectural splendour and many of his works have been inspired by the grandeur of this city’s architectural ensembles.

Sergei works with a number of private galleries in London and some of his works have been auctioned at MacDougall’s Fine Art Auction.

Sergei’s paintings and drawings have many fans across the world, as have his creative ideas and visions.

Another technique Sergei uses is ‘airbrush’, often used in his painting in combination with watercolour. This technique enables Sergei to achieve unique technical results and expand the boundaries of ordinary water-colour paintings. Although this technique demands patience, accuracy and concentration, it enables Sergei to show the subject matter of his paintings in a new dimension. Each painting could take some weeks to finish because this technique is both difficult and unique.

Sergei works in a number of mediums but, by his own admission, his favourite medium is watercolour (aquarel).

His favourite and most used technique is 'wet-in-wet' because it gives his paintings light and airy feel.

Using this technique, the paintings appear more spontaneous and emotional giving each painting its unique appearance.

Sergei says this particular medium is best suited for his character as a person, and as an artist.

With classical training behind him, Sergei also works in oil, acrylic, pastels, and chalk.

In his masterful oil and pastel portrait paintings, Sergei is able to convey not only the resemblance of a person, but also their character and emotions.

Sergei also shows great interest in graphic techniques, pencil drawing in particular.

In his graphic works, he strives for a laconic image, aiming to depict the subject of his drawing in a clean and precise manner but which still perfectly conveys the character of that subject.

Sergei strongly believes that an artist must be able to work in any medium in order to convey his vision to the audiences.

Sergei is also an experienced photographer, having worked for one of St. Petersburg’s renowned fashion houses in the past.

Today, however, Sergei focuses more on landscape and scenery photography rather than fashion shoots.

He approaches photography in the same way as art, using nature’s own colours and light to create his photo-works.
